Once again, walking in the woods never fails me.
God always seems to have some neat little message waiting for me out here.
This morning, tucked away in the middle of all these vines, I noticed this tiny yellow heart. It was almost hidden. I probably could have walked right past it, but that bright yellow caught my attention.
So, of course, I took a picture.
A little farther down the trail, an old song popped into my head:
Give a little bit of heart and soul.
Give a little bit of love to grow.
I’m an ‘80s girl, so if you’re an ‘80s person too, you probably know exactly what I’m talking about. If not, I’m sorry. I’m admitting my age at this point. 😂
But that little heart and that old song got me thinking.
What have I given my heart and soul to in this life?
And as I walked, I started making the list.
My family. My son. My husband and my marriage. My recovery. The people I love.
None of it perfectly. Let’s just get that out of the way right now.
But when I love, I love. I’m all in. Sometimes probably too all in. I can be hyper-loyal to a fault. But my heart has never really known how to do halfway.
And then I thought about Finding Grace Sanctuary.
My heart and soul are in this project.
They just are.
And somewhere along my walk this morning, I realized something.
Giving your heart and soul to something doesn’t mean you know how it’s going to turn out.
It doesn’t mean you’re never afraid.
It doesn’t mean you don’t doubt yourself.
And it certainly doesn’t mean you do it perfectly.
Sometimes giving your heart and soul to something simply means you keep taking the next step.
So this morning, walking through the woods, I found myself saying:
God, I’m giving You Finding Grace Sanctuary. Do whatever needs to be done with it. Use it for whatever purpose You want.
And you know what?
I think that’s all I need to know.
Because maybe this isn’t all about getting to some finish line where I can finally say, There. It’s done.
Maybe part of the purpose is what’s happening to me along the way.
Every step I’m afraid to take and take anyway. Every time I doubt myself and keep moving. Every new thing I have to learn. Every time I have to loosen my grip on what I think something should look like and trust God with what it might become.
Maybe that’s where the growing happens.
Maybe that’s the room I have to leave for love to grow.
And at almost 60 years old, I am so grateful I still get to do that.
I get to grow.
I get to learn.
I get to be scared and keep going.
I get to participate in something bigger than myself.
I get to give my heart and soul to something I love without having to know exactly what it’s going to become.
Maybe that little yellow heart, tucked away in all those vines, was simply my reminder this morning.
You don’t have to know exactly where something is going before you give yourself to it.
Sometimes you just give it a little heart.
A little soul.
A little love.
And leave a little room to grow. ❤️🌿
